The BA Board is pleased to announce that two more Biathlon Australia members have been selected for the Winter Youth Olympic Games (WYOG). The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) on Thursday, 21 December 2023 announced the final 24 athletes in the 47-strong Australian team that will compete in Gangwon, South Korea. Rosie Franzke and Samuel Johnson are two biathletes that were two of four athletes selected for Cross-Country skiing. The last Biathlon Australia member selected by the AOC for Cross-Country skiing at WYOG was Lucy Glanville for Innsbruck 2012. Lucy then went on to represent Australia in biathlon at Sochi 2014. Lucy is one of ten Winter Youth Olympians who has gone on to compete in the pinnacle event of the Olympic Winter Games (Sochi 2014).

Gangwon is the fourth edition of the WYOG, following Innsbruck 2012, Lillehammer 2016 and Lausanne 2020, and the first to be held in Asia.

The announcement of another two Biathlon Australia members to join TeamAUS for Gangwon 2024 brings to 18 the number of Biathlon Australia members past and present that have been selected to represent Australia at a Youth Olympic Games over the last 12 years:

Australian biathlon has come a long way in the 46 years since the Australian/Victorian Biathlon Association was formed and conducted its first events at Mt. Stirling. In the main 15km event of the 1977 Victorian Biathlon Championships long time member Bob Cranage was the winner, followed by Trevor Paul in second, and Barry Marshall of the ACT placed third. As 2023 draws to a close, there is plenty more to share on the Australian biathlon story and the Board looks forward to working with you all on writing the next Chapter in 2024. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to continuing the work to build a better biathlon for all Australians again in 2024.
