Lucy Glanville OLY - IBU Level 2 Coaching Course

Hi Biathlon Family,

Have you been wondering what Olympian Lucy Glanville has been doing lately. We thought we would ask her directly…

Firstly, what is the IBU Coach Education Program?

The IBU Academy Coach Education Program consists of 4 levels: Basic, First, Second, and Third Level. The Second Level Course consists of 3 x 5 days of education and 200 hours in total.

Where was it held and how many attended?

The first week of the course was held in Oberhof (GER) from 23-27 September 2023. Lucy was one of only six women from a total of twenty coaches selected from around the world to learn and develop skills under the guidance of some of the best coaches on the World Cup circuit. It was a competitive process to get a spot and only five coaches were selected from the previous Level One Course that Lucy completed. Lucy is grateful for the privilege of the invaluable experience of attending the Level Two course.

What was a highlight?

Lucy enjoyed collaborating with established coaches from Norway, Austria and Italy and found they were incredibly thought-provoking and inspiring.

I understand that the Level Two Course has a mentorship program. Can you tell us about that and who you were paired with?

The Level Two course has added a mentorship program and I am paired with retired Norwegian Head Coach, Roger Grubben. Grubben led the likes of Ole Einar Bjorndalen, Emil Hegle Svendsen and Tarjei Boe to Olympic gold medals. Another highlight was having Siegfreid Mazet (current Head Norwegian Coach and former Head Coach of France) spending a full day with the coaches: sharing his approach to shooting; how he developed Martin Fourcade from a youth athlete into Olympic Champion and key specifics on his coaching style with the Norwegian team. Lucy observed that arriving to meet such qualified and experienced coaches was a huge step up from the Level One course; while a little daunting at first, the opportunity to collaborate and learn from such incredible coaches from the top biathlon nations has been invaluable.

What are you up to in Soldier Hollow?

  1. Expanding my experience and knowledge through experiences with the United States Biathlon Association (USBA) and US Ski & Snowboard (USSS) National Teams:
    1. Selected to coach for the US Ski & Snowboard Junior National Training Group at their annual Fall Camp
    2. Selected to coach for USBA at the West/Alaska Regional Select Camp
  2. Additional Appointments at Soldier Hollow:
    1. Appointed 2023 Soldier Hollow Summer Collegiate Team Head Coach
    2. Appointed to Head of Youth Programming (now involved with the coaching and programming of all teams with athletes aged between 8-18) - previously Development Team Head Coach
  3. Selection and completion of Educational opportunities:
    1. Completed US Ski and Snowboard Cross Country Level 100 Coach Certification
    2. Selected for scholarship funding to attend the annual USBA Conference and pilot Women’s in Ski Coaching Summit

What’s next on the horizon?

Lucy has been selected to coach for USBA at the Junior Open European Championships (IBU Jnr Cup #4) in Jakuszyce, Poland from 7 to 11 February 2024. In answering this question, Lucy stated that she wanted to continue developing skills, knowledge and experience that can help Aussie biathletes! My favourite quote from Lucy was “I hope to be able to share this knowledge and experience with the Australian Team soon”.

We look forward to hearing more exciting things and wish Lucy every success in her future coaching endeavours. Although, not too much success when coaching for USBA against our Australian National Jnr Team athletes at IBU Jnr Cup #4.
