Dear Biathlon Family Australia,
Our National Para Team has now been processed for the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games (PWG). See Paralympics Australia article as they continue to work hard to qualify and gain selection at: https://www.paralympic.org.au/2025/05/winter-athletes-assemble-for-hectic-and-amazing-team-processing/
The team is hopeful to follow in the tracks of para biathlon trailblazer, James Millar, PLY (Australian Paralympian 789). James Millar made Australia’s first World Cup appearance for para-biathlon in February 2005 in Pragelato, ITA and then followed up again a month later in March 2005 at Klosters-Serneus / Davos, SUI. James went on to become Australia’s first Nordic Skier at a Paralympic Games for more than 20 years and Australia’s first and only ever para-biathlete at the 2006 Torino PWG. Competing in a total of five biathlon and cross-country events, and covering some 55 kilometres in competition, James became known as the “Ironman of the Australian Team”.
Twenty years on from James, Ironman World Champion Matt Brumby debuted at World Cup and leads the Australian National Para Team in the International Biathlon Union (IBU) rankings on 391.74 IBU Q points. The IBU Para Biathlon Ranking and Qualifying Points Lists can be found on the IBU website at: https://www.biathlonresults.com/#/datacenter => Menu Datacenter => IBU Qual Points => Select: Para Biathlon after 2024/2025 Season and applicable category. The latest version of the 2026 PWG Qualification Criteria can be found here: https://www.paralympic.org/milano-cortina-2026/qualification-regulations
Biathlon Australia is looking forward to our National Para team achieving more Australian firsts, as they work to reduce their IBU Q points, on their qualification journeys to our first Paralympic Games under the IBU’s purview.
Biathlon Australia, still achieving firsts, approaching 50 years together.
David, Sandy, Brett, Libby, Kat, Kate, Mark, and Murray
