Biathlon Australia – Rifle Safety Policy

Whiskey Flat / Mount Hotham – "The Moth"

To ensure the safety of all athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and visitors, the following rifle safety requirements apply at The Moth.

Building Areas

The Moth is divided into two distinct areas:

Public Day Shelter

  • Open to members of the public.
  • Rifles are not permitted in this area under any circumstances.

Biathlon Australia Function Space

  • Reserved for authorised Biathlon Australia activities.
  • Rifles may only be brought into this area when authorised by a supervising coach during approved Biathlon Australia activities.

Rifle Safety Rules

  • Rifles must never be left unattended.
  • Rifles must remain in a soft or hard rifle case while being transported.
  • Every rifle must have a CCI (Clear to Carry Indicator/Breech Flag) fitted whenever it is not being used for an authorised training activity.
  • Rifles brought into the Function Space must remain:

except during authorised dry-fire training or rifle maintenance under coach supervision.

    • Unloaded
    • Bolt open
    • CCI (Breech Flag) inserted
  • Rifles must not be left unattended in the Function Space.
  • The presence of other Biathlon Australia members does not constitute supervision.
  • Athletes remain responsible for the security of their rifle at all times, including before and after training sessions.
  • Dry firing and rifle cleaning may only occur under the supervision of an authorised coach.
  • Before commencing any dry-fire or cleaning activity, the athlete must ensure that:
    • The rifle is unloaded.
    • All magazines are unloaded.
    • The rifle and magazines are clear of ammunition.
  • The supervising coach must independently verify that each rifle and magazine is clear before the activity begins.

Safety Reminder

Safe firearm handling is the responsibility of every member. Adhering to these requirements helps ensure a safe environment for our athletes, coaches, officials and the wider public.
