Biathlon Australia Update: IBU Age Category Alignment and Oceania Regional Event

Biathlon Australia will be adopting the IBU age categories this season to ensure alignment with international standards.

This change is crucial for athletes aiming to compete overseas and as we work toward hosting IBU regional events in our region.

The most affected category is the former Under 22 division, which has now been adjusted to Under 21 in line with recent IBU changes.

Athletes and coaches should take note of this update if not already aware as it may impact eligibility for certain competitions.

We’re also pleased to share that Biathlon Australia was successful in its Regional Events application to host an Oceania IBU regional event this year.

Regrettably - having only recently been approved - we’re unable to proceed this year as firearm import approval from VicPol takes far too long & isn’t guaranteed (even for international athletes).

So, we need far more lead time so that international biathletes can obtain necessary approval/s.

Moreover, logistics such as ground transport, accommodation, competition insurance, etc also need to be considered.

Importantly, both Finland and New Zealand expressed interest in competing in Australia – and we’re confident that members of the broader international biathlon family might also be interested.

So, an IBU Regional-Oceania Event is something we will work towards for 2026.

IBU regional events are a key step in the development of our athletes and our sport, and IBU is keen for BA to continue to work towards an Oceania race series starting next season.

This will provide more opportunities for high-level competition within our region and help prepare athletes for international success.
