Czech / Aus Partnership Project Success

Published Wed 25 Oct 2023

We are pleased to report that we have just concluded a really successful two week training camp with the Czechia Biathlon B team.  Four Aus athletes, including World Cup athlete Darcie Morton, IBU Cup athlete Noah Bradford, Damika Morton, Ava McCann and Coach Damon Morton were accommodated in the Sport Hotel, Pokljuka, which is built right on the Pokljuka World Cup Biathlon stadium in Slovenia alongside the Czech Republic team.

The camp was the product of an IBU funded National Federation partnership project. All the athletes learnt a lot by being able to pair their shooting training with rollerskiing on world class tracks and shadowing such a high-level team.  It helped them all to understand the level of professionalism displayed by the European athletes. Despite some uphill intensity sessions falling on days with heavy autumn downpours, training went ahead as planned and all athletes displayed tremendous spirit in completing all the sessions, even while soaking wet. Highlights of the camps included the soccer games with all the athletes and coaches participating and a 3 hour+ rollerski through the Sava valley below Pokljuka, ending at Planica, a world-famous ski jumping centre. In turn, many of the Czech athletes voiced how it was great to learn English and enjoyed training alongside our Australian athletes.

All the athletes were involved in a practice race in the second week of the camp and were able to show that their ski speed was competitive with the other high level Czech athletes, which is encouraging for Australia for the upcoming season.  The organisation for our stay and our inclusion into their training camp was seamless and we have been encouraged with the potential to continue working with Czech in the future.

After picking up Rosie Franskie, the team have now moved onto Letohrad in the Czech Republic and are being sponsored and very well accommodated by Czech Biathlon in their third week of training. As a flow on from our relationship, Czech have invited WC athlete Darcie Morton to join their World Cup team in Idre and Sjusjoen through November to prepare for the World Cup.  Czech Biathlon have also agreed to service Darcie’s skis on World Cup, which will provide Darcie with significant support throughout the season.

A second AUS team have just arrived in Lenzerheide, SUI, for the summer IBU IOC Youth Camp with a full team of four Youth/Junior athletes; Ava McCann, Alessandra Sydun-West, Edward Woodhouse-Bedak and Phoenix Sparke.  The camp will run from the 22 – 28 October and is attended by a host of nations from Denmark to Romania to Great Britain.  It’s purpose is to provide education and development opportunities to upcoming Youth athletes and a multicultural exchange.
